Longest Shooting Rifle - A team of long-range experts in Wyoming has set what appears to be the new world record for the longest rifle shot ever completed: 7,774 yards or 4.4 miles.
Scott Austin and Shepard Humphries led Team Nomad Rifleman, a shooting and instruction center in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The custom bolt-action rifle was chambered in .416 Barrett, and the hand-turned 422-grain bullet took 24.5 seconds to hit the target.

Humphries described feeling "elevated and relieved" when he heard over the radio that the bullet had hit the target. “We've all invested a lot of time, effort and money into this project, and as with anything that hasn't been done before, the chances of success are slim,” he told MeatEater.

The team made 69 shots on the day they set the record, and their last shot miraculously hit the eight-inch center circle. The white rectangular target is 3 meters wide and 2 meters and 20 centimeters high - or about 1.7 MOA. Hitting the center circle was equivalent to putting a bullet in an area the size of a pinhead at 100 meters, Humphries explained.
The wind was his biggest enemy on the day of the shoot, Humphries said. They shot in the morning when it was relatively calm, but every time the wind speed changed, even a single mile per hour, the team had to adjust their aiming point to 26 feet.
To make matters even more complicated, they have no way of assessing the wind at any point along the bullet's flight path. On a microscopic level, wind, pressure and moisture can change from one cubic foot to another in the same cubic meter at any given time. "Even though we can 100% accurately know the 'environment' at the moment the trigger was pulled, we cannot predict what that cubic foot would be like 20-something seconds later when the bullet passed," explained Humphries. "There were more than 23,000 of these cubic meters."
Making an accurate wind call was virtually impossible, and seeing the bullet's impact also posed a challenge. When the bullet hit the target, it slowed down to 689 feet per second and produced no consistent dust signature.

So Austin and Humphries developed what they call "audio-spotting". They built bulletproof bunkers at various points around the target, and team members sat in them to listen and observe the impact of the bullet. They communicated with each other to triangulate the hit and relay that information to the weapon team.
Using that system, they targeted the shooter (whose name is being withheld at his request). The final wind and elevation call was 1,092 MOA up and 17 MOA to the left.
The crew had to shoot for around five hours that day, but years of preparation were required for success. They started planning in late 2020 and expected to break the record in the summer of 2021. But the complexity of the project and the difficulty of sourcing custom parts from international suppliers delayed that deadline, and the rifle wasn't ready until May. from 2022.
The rifle was built by Scott Null and his sons Meshac and Nehemia at S&S Sporting in Driggs, Idaho. It has a 40-inch LRI barrel with a 1:9 twist, a Cadex Dual Strike chassis, a McMillian TAC50 action, and a Timney trigger.

To see more than four miles, they used a Vortex Razor 6-36×56 FFP scope with an EBR-7D MOA reticle. The shooter could see the white square target at that distance, but Humphries said the center orange circle fluctuated in and out of visibility.
The hardest part of the build was developing a rifle/scope combo with sufficient height adjustment, Humphries said. Most telescopes are less than 100 MOA high, but the team knew they needed more than 1,000. The gauging base gave them another 350 MOA and they used a Charlie TARAC periscope for an additional 700 MOA. With the barrel angled so far up, they also have to use a Delta TARAC just to see around the barrel.
With so many moving parts and unpredictable variables, it's easy to see why it took 69 shots to hit the target. The team managed to hit a few more shots in the seconds after the first shot, but admits they couldn't repeat the feat another day (or even 10 minutes later) without making dozens of additional shots.
This type of extreme long-range shooting, in other words, could not be applied for hunting, tactical or competition purposes.

"These types of photos are just for fun," Humphries explained. "This is not for hunting purposes, and the hit still cannot be consistently repeated. Perhaps the people who beat our record and the other smart biscuits in the ERL [Extreme Long Range] world will be able to get first round hits on these distances and do in the coming years, but at this point it's not a sure thing."
In an FAQ video posted after his announcement, Humphries likened the shot to a world-record basketball shot rather than a military sniper shot.
"We don't claim ... that we can go out every day, in all winds, in all conditions and achieve an eight-inch circle at 4.4 miles," he said. "We say we go out, just have fun and try to hit a distant target."
Steve and the team at MeatEater designed this rifle in collaboration with Weatherby to create one of the best hunting weapons on the market.

The long-range world record was broken yet again when a team of spotters and a marksman hit a target 4.4 miles (7,744 yards) away in the Wyoming desert earlier this month. The feat of marksmanship was orchestrated by Scott Austin and Shepard Humphries, who run Nomad Rifleman, a long-range shooting school in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Together with a group of friends, they spent several hours shooting bullets before connecting to their 69.
Making so many shot attempts is not uncommon when trying to set records of this type. Humphries noted that the previous record, a four-mile shot by Paul Phillips in 2019, required 69 attempts before the shooter even landed.
Riflery Experts Set Bonkers World Record For Longest Rifle Shot Ever
With a hit rate of 1.44%, a shooting display like this raises an obvious problem: what does this mean in terms of actual shooting? That's a somewhat difficult question to answer because a lot of skill, engineering and prep work - more than 1,500 hours, according to Humphries - went into the feat, which requires an element of favorable probability (aka luck) to happen.
The target they were shooting at was made of thin sheet metal and measured 3 meters wide by 2.1 meters high. It was also placed at an acute angle so that it would be more in line with the fall of the bullet as it returned to Earth. The target's dimensions (120 inches x 92 inches) made it 1.54 MOA wide and 1.18 MOA high at 4.4 miles. At 1,000 yards this would be a sporting target - basically 15.4 x 11.8 inches - but by no means difficult to hit consistently with a good rifle and ammo. But there's a world of difference between touching steel in a big one and going over 7,700 meters.
To tip the odds of success in their favor, Humphries and Austin built a specialist rifle, sourcing components from around the world.

The ammunition used for the record shot was made by Unknown Munitions in Post Falls, Idaho. They used Barret brass, H50BMG propellant and CCI135 primer. The muzzle velocity of the .416 was 3,300 fps and when the bullets hit the target (which took over 24.5 seconds), they dropped to 689 fps.
For the impactful shot, Austin gave the shooter a correction of 1,092 MOA elevation and 17 MOA left stop. (I don't use the term wind because the wind value was just one of several variables that affected the sphere's horizontal displacement. Spindrift [where the sphere's angles
