At 3 Aircraft - The Aero AT-3 is a two-seat, low-wing multipurpose aircraft manufactured by Aero AT in Poland, built in certified air-ready form and kitplane. The aircraft is in a conventional configuration and has a fixed tricycle undercarriage. The structure is mostly an all-metal structure.

Designed by Tomasz Antoniewski, the aircraft first flew in 1997 and customer deliveries began in 2002. Certified according to European regulations for ultra-light aircraft. On July 2, 2010 the Aero AT-3 received a US FAA type certificate based on the European VLA certification.

Production for the European and American markets remains in Mielec, Poland, but a new assembly facility is being developed in China for the Chinese local market. In early 2014, it planned to produce more than 100 aircraft for Chinese customers by 2015.

The first Aero AT-3 was delivered to Warsaw Aeroclub in Poland in the early 2000s, and the first sale outside Poland was in the UK in 2004 (a total of 16 AT-3s have since been sold in the UK). The aircraft was also popular in France with similar sales. Additional cases operate in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain and Hungary. Since the beginning of 2014, approximately 70 Aero AT-3 aircraft have been delivered to customers in Europe, North Africa and Asia. Over 20 LSA (AT-4) variants have been released in the North American market. This aircraft is primarily used by flight training institutions with a small number of individuals. A variant with a glass cockpit and night VFR certification was also delivered within two years. It is an advanced jet trainer operated by the Republic of China Air Force (ROCAF). A total of 62 aircraft were built by Taiwan's Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation in partnership with US aircraft manufacturer Northrop.

The design of the advanced trainer began in 1975 with a conventional low-wing configuration with a tricycle undercarriage, dual-seat cockpit and two turbofans mounted on either side of the fuselage. After the design was approved in 1978, two prototypes were built. The first aircraft was launched on July 17, 1980 and made a service flight on September 16, 1980.

The AT-3 is a low-wing, straight-wing monoplane and conventional planar aircraft. The AT-3 has five gun mounts (one tail, two inner wings, and two outer wings) and wingtip launch rails. The production model's dual-control cockpit features two Zero-zero Martin-Baker 10 ejection seats. The back seat (instructor seat) was raised by 30 cm to improve visibility with the nose. Aircraft feature small bomb bays that are rarely used, and most now have auxiliary fuel tanks. The AT-3 has two Honeywell/Garrett TFE731-2-2L unburned turbofan genies for a total thrust of 3178 kg (31.1 kN; 7000 lb). It can carry various sizes of iron bombs, missile pods, AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles and locally produced TC-1 IR air-to-air missiles.

The first AT-3A operator is ROCAF Academy's Flight Training Command. In 1988, the Thunder Tiger demonstration team replaced the F-5E aircraft with the AT-3. On September 9, 1989, the 35th Fighter Squadron (Night Attack) replaced Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star trainers with AT-3s painted in the jungle colors of Southeast Asia. The AT-3 delivered to the 35th Fighter Squadron (Night Attack) was equipped with twin 12.7mm semi-recessed machine guns in the bomb hangar. 35 Squadron was later transferred to the ROCAF Academy for logistical reasons and was later decommissioned in 1999 when the aircraft were transferred to Flight Training Command.

The aircraft functions as an advanced trainer and weapons trainer, and all AT-3s in service with ROCAF are now painted in the Thunder Tiger blue, white and red colors.

The AT-3 will be operational from 2001 to 2006 with interim updates that will allow the aircraft to operate after 2016.

The XA-3 Lui Mg (simplified Chinese: 雷鸣, traditional Chinese: 雷鳴, pinyin: Léimíng) ("Thunder") single-seat attack version never made it past the prototype stage. Two aircraft numbered 901 and 902 were built. This aircraft is now retired and on display. AT-3B #825 is on loan to AIDC. These three aircraft were capable of carrying a shorted version of the HF-2 anti-ship missile and were combat-ready with this version of the missile during the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis of 1995/1996.
